The word “Bonnaroo” was first made popular by a New Orleans R & B singer named Dr. John and it comes from his album entitled “Desitively Bonnaroo.” The term means “a really good time,” and translates to “the best on the streets.”  The name was selected because of its literal meaning and musical tradition.  The very first festival was held in 2002 and took its inspiration from other musical festivals which were extremely common and popular during the 1990’s. Although in the early years, the festival received no type of traditional advertisement, to the surprise of promoters, the event sold out in nearly two weeks’ time.

What kinds of activities are available at the Bonnaroo Festival?

Throughout the week of the festival, there are various tents filled with interesting and entertaining activities.  These tents have become very popular with the nighttime crowd which as such activities as the Silent tent and many other club or bar theme venues.  Other tents include; the Comedy tent, the Cinema tent, and the Broo’ers Festival tent.  Outside the tents, Planet Roo hosts non-profit organizations which provide those attending with information about conservation and healthy living.

What is “Tent City”?

Outside the musical venue is a campground known to “Boonaroovians” as “Tent City.”  Tent City consists of about 11 pods which are set up by the festival organizers and it provides various services for campers.  Each pod has medical services and an information booth and a community art project.  Often these projects are facilitated jointly, between an invited artist and the campers and it provides some very creative projects!

What kind of accolades has the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival received in the past?

The Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival is no doubt an extremely popular event and in the past it has received many accolades.  In 2008, the festival was named best by Rolling Stone magazine who called it “the ultimate over-the-top summer festival.”  The New York Times stated “Bonnaroo has revolutionized the modern rock festival.”  USA Today has called Bonnaroo “the culmination of a musical movement” and “THE concert event of the summer.”  Finally, the Associated Press has called it “Bonnaroo: three days and four nights of musical history in the making.”
